However, since SOME of these additions were done outside of Army control, most purist collectors seem to prefer carbines without them.ģ56000 was likely made in 1901. But, they do not snap on - that is a great way to split the fragile wood - if you find one, disassemble the gun, including rear sight, and slide the handguard on.Ĭarbines were not ORIGINALLY made with swivels, but a significant number have had them added. To be complete, it should have the handguard, and, most (nearly all of those in collections - as opposed to hunting rifles) specimens do. Model of sight often does not "match" model of arm, and the Ordnance Department was ablaze with personal rivalries as to which/whose sight was "best". Krag sights and their (mostly non-interchangeable) handguards are a MORASS.

Later still, the M1902C sight was proposed, and fitted to a few arms. Later, MANY were built, or retro-fitted, with M1901C sights. This (graduated for a "hotter" loading) was recalled, and some carbines were fitted with M1896C sights. All M1899 Carbines are alike, except for the model of rear sight with which they were/are equipped. Yes, basically, all Model 1899s are carbines (technically there were a VERY few overstruck receivers, but they are FAR outside the mainsteam). Stock appears to have four grooves (each about 5/8" long and about 3/32" deep) where hand guard may have been fastened, or possibly snapped into place one on each side beginning one inch behind backside of barrel band, and one each side beginning one inch behind rear sight frame.Īny info or additional sources will be very much appreciated. Would we expect them on the Carbine in the group the SN places it? Also, I've never personally seen a Carbine other than mine, but I assume the fact that it is missing the wooden hand guard on top of barrel is not unusual.

My carbine has sling swivels (though I've never had a sling) which I don't see much on Carbines online.
SPRINGFIELD 1898 SIGHTS SERIAL
Does that make it one of 2,000 "Third Model" Carbines manufactured in 1901? Is there any significance to the "000" Serial Number?īased on several photos online, I note a couple of things.
SPRINGFIELD 1898 SIGHTS SERIAL NUMBER
I found a serial number listing at National Park Service website which seems to indicate that all Model 1899s were carbines. I ordered the Poyer book to get me started. I have just today started investigating and find this site interesting. I've owned a Model 1899 Krag Carbine for about 50 years without knowing much more about it than it killed deer and antelope every time I asked it to.
